English
English at Swanmead develops children's understanding of both spoken and written English so that they can become enthusiastic, responsive and knowledgeable readers. It teaches children to communicate effectively at home, at school, and in the wider world leading to improved life-long opportunities. The skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing enable children to organise and express their own thoughts and to access the knowledge and ideas of others.
In Year 5 and 6, pupils follow the KS2 Renewed Framework, using national resources, county resources and resources adapted by the department. They receive 5 lessons of English a week, taught by specialist English teachers. At Key Stage 3, English is taught following the KS3 renewed Framework guidelines. Units of work are taught on a termly basis and pupils receive three lessons per week, taught by English Specialists. In all year groups, pupils are set by ability and intervention is received where applicable.
Pupils at Swanmead enjoy a range of extra-curricular activities related to English. These include: Children's Parliament, Youthspeaks, Enterprise Fundraising Activities, Readathons and Poetry Recitals.
